I would like to thank Datin Siti Mariani Haji Omar and the curatorial staff of the Pusat Manuskrip Melayu, Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia for their constant assistance in my ongoing study of illumination in Malay manuscripts since 1990. These are the first analyzed Islamic illuminated manuscripts from the collection of Oriental manuscripts at the National and University Library St. This survey of illumination in East Coast manuscripts, many of which are not listed in published catalogues and have never been reproduced, could not have been accomplished without the kind assistance of the custodians of the collections concerned. Pigments and inks in five Islamic illuminated manuscripts, dated from 16th to 18th century, were investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy and SEM-EDX.
