The film as a whole ended up being panned across the board, but every review had to at least give it up to Meryl for her work in humanizing the infamous Margaret Thatcher. If an actress is good enough to be better than everyone else every time she performs, then she might deserve another Golden Globe already. Viola Davis is relatively new to the screen, but at every turn she finds a way to showcase her talents. Although Bridesmaids certainly deserves a nomination in the comedy category (sadly, softer drama and other non-comedies usually end up here in place of true comedies like Bridesmaids, I wouldn’t have been surprised to see Hugo in this category instead of Drama, but such are the politics of film awards), I would prefer to see Paris or 50/50 in the winner’s circle. Had it gone into the Drama category where it belongs, we would have loved to see Midnight in Paris in the spotlight. To be honest, The Artist doesn’t belong in this category, but because it is in the category it deserves to be recognized as the best. As a debut piece and Cannes baby that has been generating steam for the past six months, this silent work of art has had people talking long enough to deserve a win. Seriously, have you seen the film? It won’t win any popularity contests or People’s Choice Awards, but those that can sit still and appreciate a silent film about the rise of talking films will find this to be a masterpiece. It’s just a shame almost no one has seen it yet. Being in this category almost guarantees a win, mostly because not only is the film an absolute masterpiece, it is also easily accessible to the public. Although I suppose you could call The Artist a “musical” because of the musical score that you hear instead of the actor’s words, it isn’t really more of a comedy than Hugo or The Help.
